To test if your 7.1 speakers/headphones are giving you true 7.1 you can download an 8 channel demo audio file from Microsoft:

I've just tested it on my new Logitech G35 and can now tell the difference between 5.1 (speakers) and 7.1 (headphones).
The best defence against software piracy is producing a game worth buying.
