With Treyarch' Call of Duty Vietnam coming this November, speculations have started about the next modern warfare...
Speculation has been rising over the last twenty four hours, with VG247 sources saying that Infinity Ward will not be making the sequel to Modern Warfare 2. After that, sources told Destructoid that Infinity Ward will instead make an MMO. We’ve asked Activision themselves and they’ve said “Activision does not comment on rumour or speculation” So if all this speculation is true, then we have to look at the future of Modern Warfare.

Today, after seeing some new job listings, we’re predicting that newly established Activision subsidiary Sledgehammer Games will be the developer to take on the Modern Warfare franchise.

Who are Sledgehammer Games?

Headed by the ‘leaders of the Dead Space franchise’ Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, Sledgehammer Games are currently creating an as-yet-unannounced game.

Sledgehammer to develop Modern Warfare 3 – Clue 1

Looking through a range of job listings on the Gamasutra job boards, one listing from the development studio are looking for a gameplay engineer. The listing states that they’re in need of someone who “will be responsible for bringing to life several playable characters and NPCs in an unannounced next- gen title.”

As we all know, there are a range of playable characters in the Call of Duty series. And it doesn’t only have some notable playable characters as we’ve seen Ghost (a non-playable character) in Modern Warfare 2.

Sledgehammer to develop Modern Warfare 3 – Clue 2

What made Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 the giants in the industry they are today? Online multiplayer. And in a second listing from the developer, it states that they want someone who can “create innovative multiplayer experiences”

The listing also states the person applying must have “5 years experience working on current AAA multiplayer shooters for current consoles and PC.” – So they’re looking for someone with a lot of experience on top quality shooters.

“Design and implementation of multiplayer HUD and lobby.” is also mentioned in the job requirements, and the online lobby was extremely simple to use, and pleased many gamers.

We’re not expecting to hear anything about the game for a while (if it is a Call of Duty title), as Treyarch are currently working on what is thought to be a Vietnam era setting instalment in the franchise. But we'll have to wait and find out.
