CPU? it's not listed.

DON'T get Vista, Windows 7 releases in October.
If you do get Vista make sure you get it with a free upgrade to 7

Personally I'd stick with XP till Windows 7 SP1 is released, atleast then we'll all know if its an improvement over Vista.

Windows 7 RC is an improvement over Vista, just upgraded my test rig so I'll try some games on it this weekend.
If you look at windows history 7 has got to work :p
3.1 worked
95 didn't
98 worked
ME didn't (but 2000 did)
XP worked (for the most part)
Vista (even MS are trying to forget this one)
7 (anyone else noticed the 9th edition of windows is called 7? I thought it was only pentiums that couldn't count)

@Porky you could either buy it OS free and do as Grumps suggests and use your existing XP key (if it's a OEM brand like Dell there's a good chance the license has never been used) or use 7 RC until 7 full arrives (I've got keys if you need one)

XP can only make use of a 3gb ram, however there is no game out there at present that requires such memory requirements, so 3gb should be fine, unless you're doing loads of video editing.

32bit OS like XP or Vista_32 & W7_32 can only address 4gb including gfx memory, windows reserves 0.25gb because it wants to.
Usable memory = total ram - 0.25gb - gfx ram ie:
4gb - 0.25gb - 0.5gb = 3.25gb usable ram

W7 RC = Release Candidate, post beta, pre release. Looks pretty good at first glance, because it's vista related there's less driver problems than when vista was released. Release to manufacturing = end of July (dell etc), general release = October
