pay attention to 1920x1080 resolutions as you wont play lower than this with a 5800 series if you do then just buy a 9800gt ;)
also go check the mobo specs from Asus --P6X58D-E Intel X58 to see future flexibility on cpu side of things no good buying it if the i7 920 is the last it will support (no i havnt checked but the E suffix means somthing in my eye
good luck james as you pretty much built the equivelant of each other
dont forget bulldozer(octocore) still coming out 2011 and bobcat dual core with graphic gpu

mhz for mhz the intel is better as they have more onchip cache, BUT £ for £ the amd is better value, a £200 amd will perform better than £200 intel.
personally I'd get the amd and spend the difference on upgrading the gfx card (or getting a crossfire pair)
and this mb is on special atm

I've heard Hanzy talk!
Some people are like Slinkies. They’re not really good for anything; but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs!
thanks for the replies, i looked at your post ICE and was like..whoa thats just about what im gonna build.
how does your PC perform?
regarding the AMD option, for around the same price as the intel version i can keep what i posted but crossfire the 5850s...would this be better?
i like the idea of 12GB ram on the intel, but i think it maybe overkill lol

I can run everything on max with good FPS @ 1680x1050 (including Crysis!), in Bad Company I get around 100FPS which is rather good for that game.
If you're not afraid of overclocking, Im sure you get a lot more performance out of it, I havent overclocked as I use it for work (self employed) and play
I cant comment on the X-Fire as I've never done it
If you have 12gb ram, you could create a RAM drive and use it to install a demanding game on it, should get a bloody good performance boost (people who played the Armed Assault series do this as the hard drive is a limiting factor in performance).

The best defence against software piracy is producing a game worth buying.
lol
well, i have restructured my pricing (and face divorce if she finds out lol) but i can spec the i7 920 with crossfire 5850s for £70 more than the same machine but with an amd cpu (1055t)
only difference is, amd spec machine has 8gb where as intel has 6gb
i could get the 930, but that would make it more expensive, and the 920 will overclock to 930.
decisions, decisions!
